Aerial Thermography for Photovoltaics
Aerial Thermography for Photovoltaics
At present, manual electrical testing (i.e. IV Curve Tracing) is the de-facto method of inspecting PV fields for identifying faulty cells, panels and string errors. Despite this being the industry standard for inspecting and evaluating the performance of a solar array, it can only be performed by trained, highly skilled technicians using handheld testing kits during only ideal environmental conditions. During the test, each string, or a row of panels scheduled to be tested, must be unplugged from the array and plugged into the manual electrical testing device. In addition to the issue of scale, technicians must manually interpret test results to determine the PV system performance. This takes hours or days for a small site, let alone for a large PV park.
The integration of drone technology has completely improved the efficiency and accuracy of the inspection process. Thermal cameras can survey large areas within a PV park, collecting high-resolution infrared images during just a single flight. To complement and enhance manual electrical testing, the use of drone thermal imaging for solar inspections (i.e. aerial thermography) is growing in popularity, primarily due to the speed and level of detail that the service can provide.
Whereas the manual inspection of a PV park may take hours or days, a drone thermal imaging inspection and analysis (down to the cell-level defect) can be accomplished in a fraction of the time. Our Aerial Thermography service is fast, accurate and actionable and most importantly, in accordance with IEC TS 62446-3:2017. We provide inspection of your PV system, process the thermography data, identify, classify, and prioritize all anomalies. All anomalies have an exact location for efficient remediation.
